Lloyd Cole (of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions fame) will be playing all of his classic hits when he plays Whitley Bay and Yarm in February.

“Jodie wears a hat although it hasn’t rained for six days / She says a girl needs a gun these days / Hey on account of all the rattlesnakes / She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On The Waterfront / She reads Simone de Beauvior in her American circumstance.” Yep: Lloyd Cole certainly gave Morrissey a run for his money in the bedsit bard stakes back in the 1980s with a string of hits which married literary derring do with some cracking tunes including Rattlesnakes, Forest Fire, Perfect Skin, Lost Weekend, Brand New Friend, Are You Ready to be Heartbroken, Jennifer She Said, and many more. And he’ll be unpacking them all at this gig in which he’ll be performing songs from the Lloyd Cole songbook circa 1983-1996, concentrating on the Commotions stuff and his early solo work. Altogether now: “When she smiles my way / My eyes go out in vain / She’s got perfect skin”.

Lloyd Cole: Friday 23 February, Playhouse, Whitley Bay, 7.30pm, £22.50; Saturday 24 February, Princess Alexandra Auditorium, Yarm, 8pm, £22.50. thepaaonline.org
