Does this say “Winter” to you?
They are but four times a year - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – but are always worth the wait. Because with the Cobalt Seasonals, the venue aims to blur those boundaries between genres and break every rule going. Think: part theatre, part cabaret, part gig and part club night and you’ll get an inkling of what they’re all about. It’s like a complete festival in one night, with one or two twists thrown in for good measure.
Among the bands you can see (actually, scratch “see” and insert “experience”) are K.O.G and The Zongo Brigade (pictured) who will be strapping rocket-boosters onto the night with their infectious, high energy and wild afrobeat. Also along for the ride are the Smokin Coconuts with their sleazy cocktail of reggae, klezmer, calypso and Latin rhythms.
There will also be the chance to compete in the first seasonal Winter Olympics (five disciplines! Mandatory drug tests! Medal ceremony!), animation, DJs, dancing and more. It’s called Winter, but, rest assured, it’s going to be hotter than a microwaved Ginsters pastie.
Winter: K.O.G and The Zongo Band + The Smokin’ Coconuts, Saturday 27 January, Cobalt Studios, 10-16 Boyd Street, Newcastle, 8pm-2am, £12 in advance or on the door (note: last year’s sold out; best get ‘em early). Available from Ernest or cobaltstudios.co.uk
