When Irish folk singer Cara Dillon brings her Christmas show Upon A Winter’s Night to Sage Gateshead in December, be prepared for a heart-stopping (and heart-warming) performance.

Upon A Winter’s Night is the kind of Christmas album I turn to when I’ve had enough of sleigh-bells and Noddy Holder hollering “It’s Christmas!” at 100 decibels. It’s a more contemplative take on the festive season featuring eight arrangements of traditional carols (O Holy Night, The Holly and the Ivy, etc) as well as three original compositions (including Standing by my Christmas Tree, a song which always gets me right there). It is a truly beautiful release and a world away from the usual excesses that we associate with the festive season today. For her gig at Sage Gateshead we’re promised songs from this album along with classic carols, Celtic hymns and other Christmas songs that celebrate the spirit of the season. And by playing the more intimate surroundings of Sage Two, I just know that her crystalline voice is going to sound utterly captivating.
