2017 has been a fabulous year for the Shipley as they celebrate their 100th birthday and they’re continuing apace with special exhibitions and events in November.

This short-trousered young tyke is looking suitably spellbound by an exhibit at the Shipley sometime around the late 50s/early 60s. But visitors have been similarly enchanted throughout the gallery’s 100 year history and – given that it opened on 29 November 1917 – they’ve got some real treats lined up this month. Visitors can join a Behind the scenes art tour (2 November, £2.50) to explore some of the hidden treasures in the Shipley’s art store. Families can get messy with clay in Dynamic Ceramic (4 November, £2.50) and help to make a mini Shipley Art Gallery filled with works of art – all made out of clay (plus make your own clay sculptures to take home). The Shipley’s ever-popular Creative Baby (15 November, £5) returns with a sensory play session for babies under 12 months old, with dens, lights, textures, mirrors, music and more. November celebrations culminate in 100 years of the Shipley: Gallery Tour and Talk (30 November, £2), in which John Thompson, former Director of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, will discuss the history of the gallery and some of the collection highlights. Visitors can find out more about exhibitions and events from their website, below.
