Clubs Editorial

georgianclub17.jpg Yowwwwwwwwwww!

When it comes to funk and soul this November all roads lead to Stockton’s Georgian Theatre when the Funk Soul Social gets set to cook up the kind atmosphere that will hark back to the some of the north’s classic nights of yore.

If you like Zapp (not Zappa) then you may well have found yourself giving it six-nowt at some of the best nights the North has ever staged including MacMillan’s, Mandy’s, Bennett’s, Buddy’s and The Kirk come Saturday night. They were clubs that drew their soundtracks from the more sophisticated end of the dance spectrum, dealing in quality funk and soul that moved you onto a higher plane. We’re talking the best in white-sock and jazz-funk classics from the likes of Jocelyn Brown, George Benson, Chaka Khan, Loose Ends, James Brown, Roy Ayers, D Train, Alexander O’Neal, Change, Zapp, Atlantic Starr, Boz Scaggs, Shakatak, Cameo, Azymuth, Spyro Gyra and plenty more besides. The Funk Soul Social has really recaptured that vibe and they’ll be letting their hair down when they set up shop in Stockton this November.

Funk Soul Social, Friday 24 November, Georgian Theatre, Green Dragon Yard, Stockton, 9pm, £10. teesmusicalliance.org.uk; funksoulsocial.com
