sundpride17.jpg Sunderland Pride! It's back!

Things were looking a little dicey for Sunderland Pride this year, as to whether or not it would even go ahead, but – shout it from the rooftops! – it’s all set to happen once again on Sunday 24 September.

Pride events are not like Snow White where they can call upon assorted forest animals to help them out when they’re in a bit of a hole. They need cold hard cash and Sunderland’s seventh Pride event looked to be in real danger of falling by the wayside this year until a number of organisations and businesses stepped in. Sunderland Business Improvement District has agreed to sponsor the main stage and they have been joined by a range of local bars, pubs and restaurants including Gatsby, Hidden, Port of Call and Papas Tapas. Barclays, Sunderland City Council and Northumbria Police have also stepped up to the plate, along with Station Taxis who are on board as wristband sponsors. Chris Ramsay, chair of Sunderland Pride: “We’ve had a few hiccups this year due to funding which led to us initially cancelling the event. However, we are delighted that so many businesses have offered their support to make Pride happen. I have been involved with Pride from day one and have seen it go from strength to strength but fully understand that some organisations have had to pull out from sponsorship or reduce that amount because of lack of funds. Thankfully we have got over this and can look forward to another amazing year.”
