Something is stirring in Sunderland and, if I’m not very much mistaken (and I’m not), it’s the infectious indie-pop of this sparky bunch.

The video for Athletes In Paris’ new single ‘Borrowed Time’ (released on 11 March) kicks off with a be-suited business man telling the band: “I’ve heard worse, but I’ve heard a lot better. But do you know what I think of when I look at you? A shite One Direction.” As it happens, the business man is without trousers, and he’s also WITHOUT A CLUE, because Athletes In Paris could TAKE ONE DIRECTION TO THE FUCKING CLEANERS. They’ve got a Little Comets-style perkiness that’s very evident in ‘Borrowed Time’, which is overflowing with jump-up grooves, sharp as a dart guitar jangle and lovely northern vocals. Their infectious ways and means have already been turning heads at Radio 6 and, I have to say, I’ve always loved Athletes In Paris in the spring. And I’m sure you will, too.
