threedegress17.jpg Prince Charles’ favourite band!

It’s those Three Degrees and their 50th anniversary tour sees them swinging by Middlesbrough in August. Should be good.

Apparently Prince Charles once let slip that The Three Degrees were his favourite band sometime back in the day, but whereas this pre-eminent girl group went on to headline concerts right across the globe, Charles, sadly, became the ultimate support act. The group were formed in Philadelphia back in the 1960s and have moved easily between genres from the girl group pop boom, through to soul (and psychedelic soul as evinced on their brilliant 1970 album Maybe, which is still a regular on my playlists), and on to disco. They’ve had a string of hits including When Will I See You Again, Dirty Ol’ Man, Take Good Care of Yourself and the classic TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), which topped the charts around the world. What marks them out from many of their peers is the sheer quality of their harmonies, which remain undimmed to this day. Grab yourself a ticket before Charlie boy nabs ‘em all.
