…and the time is right for dancing in the street! (Or, more specifically, Stockton’s Georgian Theatre when Motown legends Martha Reeves and the Vandellas take to the stage to knock out a greatest hits set.)

Come and Get these Memories may not be the most heralded of all singles by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas but it became the recording that inspired Motown head-honcho Berry Gordy to coin the term “The Motown Sound”, a phrase today that instantly conjures up timeless pop songs built from thumping beats and ice-cream melodies. That track scraped into the Top 30, but they followed it up with some of the greatest singles in the whole Motown catalogue with the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland pulling out their biggest hooks. I’m talking Heatwave, Quicksand, Nowhere to Run, Jimmy Mack, I’m Ready for Love, and, of course, their signature song, Dancing in the Street (which survives intact today despite being put through the mangle back in the 1980s by Bowie and Jagger). In all they scored 26 hits over their nine-year reign in the 1960s and they’ll be revisiting their most timeless when they swing by the lovely Georgian Theatre in June.
