When two of the region’s most engaging and forward-thinking bands (step forward and take a bow Iceni – pictured – and Überloon) combine, the results are never less than startling.

This is going to be really something special. Newcastle band Iceni (pictured) make music that comes from the kind of pastures you might find Ben Folds Five, Eels and Kate Bush frolicking in. Jazz hobbit Jamie Cullum is a fan, frothing: “I really like them; amazing mixture between piano rock and piano pop; it’s eccentric with great harmonies and very original sounding.”

Fellow Tynesiders Überloon meanwhile are another band given to ploughing their own furrow. In these very pages we’ve described them as “sounding not unlike something from a 1930s tea-dance where the tea has been spiked with something stronger than Darjeeling,” and they’ve also been compared to Tom Waits and Can.

The two bands have both performed together before to great acclaim, and this collaboration should be really special as it’s the last time the Loon will perform with their current line-up. And the fact that it’s all taking place in North Shields’ thriving cultural hub, The Exchange, will only add to the sense of occasion. As the headline says: Get set for wonderments.

Iceni + Überloon, Saturday 6 May, The Exchange, Howard Street, North Shields, 7pm, £10. https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/date/343501
