bridgehiphop17.jpg Hip Hop. Grime. Sorted.

The Bridge are commandeering Sage 2 at Sage Gateshead in early May for a full day of the best UK hip hop and grime in what looks to be one of THE events of the spring.

Oh man! This is going to be straight outta the top drawer. Not least because they’ve got Paigey Cakey playing (pictured), one of the freshest Grime MCs in the UK today who has released mixtapes with the likes of Stormzy and Sneakbo and is renowned for her citrus sharp rhymes (check out Boyfriend in which she raps about the joys of not needing a fella: “The only thing I bang is the Cillit”). The new generation is also represented by local hero Kema Kay (who could also recently be seen acting in I, Daniel Blake).

But the event also respects the history of the form with old skool representation arriving in the shape of DJ Marga and Brainiac, members of the ground-breaking UK rap outfit Katch 22, as well as Blade, one of the UK’s finest hip hop MCs.

Other names to look out for include Holly Flo Lightly (whose jazz infused lyrical ways and means have seen her gain a huge following), Genesis Elijah (the London don), and Tyneside badman Gilly Man Giro. Hosting is Ken Masters with DJ support from scratch master A.D.S. We’ve just skimmed the full line-up here, be sure to check out their website for the full phat version.
