Cattle & Cane it
Cattle & Cane’s 2016 release Home is still my go-to album when I want rousing folk rock songs that glow with a polished poppy sheen. The band write truly classic tunes that hark back to tunesmiths of yore, such as Godley and Creme or Steely Dan, and their gorgeous harmonies are strictly of the heart-stopping variety. And they imbue their songs with an incredible warmth that really comes over live, especially when it comes to those rousing choruses that ring every Sing-A-Long bell going.
Their new album, Mirrors, is out on 28 April and their army of followers await with breath duly baited for their latest assault on our hearts. They played a storming gig in their hometown of Middlesbrough just before Christmas, and I’ll be looking for some more of the same when they bring their passion to Sage Gateshead in early May (and Stockton Calling in April). If you’ve not yet succumbed, it’s time you opened your heart to let them fill it up with the good stuff.Cattle & Cane + special guests, Thursday 4 May, Sage Two, Sage Gateshead, 8pm, £9.30. sagegateshead.com (they’re also one of the headliners at this year’s Stockton Calling that takes place on Saturday 15 April: stocktoncalling.co.uk)
