Simply Divine, darling
This highly-praised film tells how Harris Glenn Milstead went from being an overweight Baltimore youth to the internationally recognised drag superstar, Divine. And what a ride his life was. Tipping up the apple-cart of body image, gender identity, sexuality and notions of what constitutes beauty, Divine succeeded in blurring the lines between his life and his art and, along the way, managed to star in one of the most notorious films of all-time (Pink Flamingos – which, as anyone who has seen it will testify, has an ending more shocking than The Shining); score a genuine box-office hit, Hairspray (both directed by long-time collaborator John Waters); and find global chart success with hi-nrg disco hits such as You Think You’re A Man, I’m So Beautiful and Walk Like A Man. This fascinating portrait gives us the legend, but, more importantly, the man underneath all the glam and glitz.
I Am Divine is released on 25 August.
