Four artists question the nature of sacredness and spirituality. It’s bitterly cold and it still gets dark pretty early, but if you travel to the National Glass Centre this month a host of illuminated artworks might lift your spirits. In fact, the exhibition examines the elevated emotions involved with light, for example in religious festivals. It gives us the chance to experience some artists’ experiments with light, and to wonder about the inspiration these might give.

Meditate with Vong Phaophanit’s neon Rice Field, where a minimalist arrangement of long grain rice is made to glow seductively. Brit-artist Fiona Banner has bent, shaped and blown her own alphabet from neon tubing, recalling contemporary advertising as well as ancient scripts. Alec Finlay works with our desire to have a ‘name in lights’, while Richard Meitner poetically uses an oil-lamp flame to mimic neon’s particular radiance.Make a piece of artwork inspired by what you have seen at the NGC. Glass Mosaic, Sandcasting, Glass Painting and Recycled Sculpture workshops are led by the Glass Centre’s skilled studio artists. RH
