George Maciunas: The Dream Of Fluxus, Baltic, Nov 25-Feb 15

Influential, light-hearted, intellectual, playful… Fluxus has been credited with introducing radical performance, conceptual strategies and ‘intermedia’ (the intersection of varied media) to the 1960s

art scene. With a name taken from the Latin word ‘to flow’, Fluxus has had a significant impact not only on purely visual art, but also on architecture, urban planning, literature, music and design. In the early 60s small networks and groups of artists and composers in different parts of the world were gradually linked up with the help of Lithuanian artist George Maciunas. Chance, simplicity, hand-made aesthetics and DIY- anti-commercialism were key principles of the growing movement. Blurring the boundaries of ‘serious’ modern art, a Fluxus artwork could involve ‘exiting a room, making a salad, or ending a war’, focusing on transformation of the everyday and a hopeful attitude.

Working beautifully alongside Yoko Ono’s exhibition (she has been associated with Fluxus), BALTIC presents 350 of the movement’s works from the renowned Gilbert and Lisa Silverman collection. A must-see, possibly requiring repeat visits, to take in the fun and optimistic spirit of Fluxus in our sometimes gloomy times.
