Newcastle
Air Airport Newcastle Airport is located only 15-20 minutes from the city centre. There are regular and frequent air services from European cities along with connections from major international cities around the world, plus UK and Ireland direct schedule services. Rail Central Station Direct train services operate from most cities in Britain to Central Station, which is served by Great North Eastern Railways, Virgin Cross Country and Regional Railways. Sunderland
Air Airport At some 20 miles away, Newcastle Airport is the nearest to Sunderland. There are good Metro links directly to Sunderland town centre or it's approximately a thirty five minute drive. For more information and details of scheduled routes:

Durham

Rail Durham is served by the British Rail main East Coast Inter-City route. There is a frequent high speed service between London and Scotland, stopping at Durham.

Tees Valley

Getting Around
The Metro
Tyne and Wear Metro has been rated as one of the country’s most efficient modes of transport and carries more than 37 million passengers a year. It is an ideal way to get to and from the airport as well as coastal areas and Sunderland. The Metro trains have room for wheelchairs and buggies and have comfortable seating. Many stations now have real-time platform indicators (telling you how many minutes before the next train arrives), help points, CCTV, payphones and a high standard of accessible information as well as improved lifts and escalators. Tickets are purchased via ticket machines at the Metro stations. Lookout for Metro DaySaver tickets.

Buses
Bus services in NewcastleGateshead are frequent and there are a wide variety of special travel tickets available:
Network Traveltickets save you time, money and the inconvenience of buying individual
tickets. They offer unlimited journeys within Tyne and Wear and are available for weekly, two weekly, four weekly and annual travel. They are valid on Metro, Shields Ferry, buses, and Newcastle to Sunderland Rail line.
Day Rover gives you all the freedom to travel, all day – wherever you want, anywhere with Tyne and Wear. Tickets are available to purchase from most Metro ticket machines and from the bus driver. It’s easy to use – all you do is show the driver or inspector your ticket when you board. Then just travel as much as you like on bus, Metro, the Sunderland to Blaydon rail line, and the Shields Ferry.
The North East Explorer Ticket - The ticket you need if you want to combine journeys on an Arriva bus with journeys on buses operated by other bus companies or the Tyne and Wear Metro.

The Metro is ideal for students - there are Metro stations located near to all the main university and college campuses and many of the halls of residences. With a Metro Student Card you get unlimited travel in the zones chosen.
