Part of the popular chain of Italian restaurants, this is pretty standard stuff and at a price that’s ever so slightly steep in this recession-dominated times.

Baltic

BALTIC’s (the huge contemporary art gallery) café/bar serves up a lovely array of hot and cold snacks, soft and alcoholic drinks plus light bites and sweet treats. A nice piece of cake and a cup of tea somehow makes the vaguer ender of conceptualism much easier to digest.

Gateshead Quays | 0191 440 4949 | Manors / Gateshead Metro

Banana Leaf is a Chinese buffet restaurant with prices from £4.99-£7.99 for various menus. It can get very hectic and busy, so you could say it’s the authentic atmosphere of China.

124-130 Linthorpe Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 247 100

Bar 1

This bar/cafe is something of a winner, and freshly underwent a revamp in the summer. Serving food between 12am-6pm in a stylish interior, they sell a great range of pasta dishes as well as burgers and such like. It's a bar too and so you can enjoy the food free ambience until 1am every night.

Front Street Cleadon | 0191 536 4198

Cafe 21

This smart place (whites, greys, chocolates) has won a raft of awards and they maintain a high standard. A good choice of dishes (particularly fish) it usually attracts the business or older end of the market who can’t get enough of these simple yet imaginative dishes with real respect given over to the ingredients.

Trinity Gardens Newcastle | 0191 222 0755 | Central Station Metro

15-16 Green Tce. Sunderland | 0191 567 2022 | Park Lane Metro

Cafe Continental

Once situated on Milburngate Bridge, this little place was much-missed when it closed its doors the first time around only to be replaced by a chain operation. However, Café Continental is back in business on Elvet Bridge and doing what it does best – serving up scrumptious cakes, delicious deserts and other tasty morsels along with a range of hot and cold drinks.

87 Elvet Bridge Durham | 0191 387 0000

Cafe Neon

A sparky Bigg Market establishment that gets busy during the day, mainly with office workers and people taking a break from shopping who fancy a nice omelette, a hot baguette or an all-day brekkie. There's tables outside when the sun deigns to shine and inside there's a light, Mediterranean feel.

8 Bigg Market | 0191 260 2577 | Monument Metro

Cafe Prego

Why not begin your cafe tour of Middlesbrough here? It is at the top end of Linthorpe Road, so you can grab a mocha and chill in its burgundy splendour and then head down towards the busy bustle of ‘Boro.

Onelife Building Linthorpe Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 228744

Cafe Pronto

Cafe Pronto encourages locals to write while they slurp on their herbal tea. It has various cork boards dotted around so you can pin up any illustrations or poetry that you may feel compelled to create. A degree of balance is necessary because this place is a huge fan of barstools, but as long as you don’t go there drunk, you’ll be right as rain...but if you did go in drunk, just imagine the poetry!

65 Albert Rd Middlesbrough | 01642 230077

Cafe Rouge

Another French restaurant, this chain venue serves quality cuisine albeit at a price that’s perhaps a little ambitious for Durham. Predictably, the atmosphere is more that of a café than full-blown restaurant, which lends itself well to the lunch deals on offer that are arguably superior to their evening counterparts.

20-21 Silver Street Durham | 0191 384 3429

Cafe Royal

The downstairs area here is very popular during the day with their all-day menu consisting of such fancies as seared salmon salad Nicosia, rocket tortelloni with olive oil, basil, tomatoes and olives.

6-7 Douro Sunderland | 0191 510 2002 | Park Lane Metro

Caffe Nero

A very tidy – albeit wholly ubiquitously branded - little café that serves up tremendous toasted Italian baguettes alongside a range of pastries, cakes, muffins and coffee. Promising as it does to serve up 'the best espresso this side of Milan', why donyou be the judge and give it a go?

34 Silver St. Durham | 0191 384 9444

Caffe Teatro

Part of the Theatre Royal complex, this lovely café is open from 9am for speciality coffees, hot rolls, cakes and pastries. For lunch and dinner they serve contemporary style dishes and light options with an extensive ranges of wines and other drinks.

Theatre Royal Market St. Newcastle | 0191 244 2510 | Monument Metro

Caffe Vivo

Situated within the brilliant Live Theatre complex this is a fabulous café by day and fabulous restaurant by night, capturing everything that is gorgeous, crazy and fun about Italy. No frills, no fuss, just very friendly service, a great buzz and superb food.

Live Theatre 29 Broad Chare Quayside Newcastle | 0845 201 1213 | Manors Metro

Caffe Zonzo

Slightly out of the city centre, this is a glorious little restaurant which has captured the imagination of the local - as well as national - press. The regional Italian dishes and deli-bar snacks are a constant delight as are their quality wines and cocktails. The nice laid back, unhurried air only adds to its attraction. Make a date.

83-89 Goldspink Lane Sandyford Newcastle | 0191 230 4981 | Jesmond Metro

Caffetessen at ARC

Whether you pop in for breakfast or a light lunch, something more substantial or a pre-show meal, Caffétessen at ARC is the perfect venue. Gold & Brown is a company founded on ethical business practices and as a result they are committed to Fairtrade, protecting the environment, recycling and sustainability which is why all their fresh supplies come from local independent butchers, bakers and fruit & vegetable suppliers. A goodie.

Dovecot Street Stockton-on-Tees | 01642 525195

The Capital

Perhaps Durham’s most-well regarded Indian, this classy restaurant is hidden away further up the hill from Rajpooth (see below). Serves all the usual dishes and is usefully positioned near The Big Jug and Woodman for a few pints afterwards.

Claypath Durham | 0191 386 8803

Central Park

Having just opened Central Cafe next door, it seems the Central Park empire is growing and growing. It can get very busy in here around dinner time and in the evening, so be prepared to wait at the bar until a table becomes available. The food is reasonably cheap and the service is quick, and it can provide for many a palette, from pasta to parmos.

337 Linthorpe Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 820 586

Che Vita Ristorante Italiano

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of this place is it occasionally dispenses vouchers throughout the city that entitle diners to buy two main courses for the price of one. Freebies aside, Che Vita Ristorante Italiano is a huge if relatively mundane chain restaurant, dispensing the usual pizzas and pastas at a reasonable price.

Station Lane Durham | 0191 384 1010

China Buffet King

This is an all-you-can-eat buffet, hence why it believes itself to be the king. It’s always very busy because Teessiders are always hungry. There should be a warning taped to the door that clothing, especially around the waistband area, may no longer fit once you have finished your meal. It has a wide selection of products, so you find yourself spoilt for choice.

477 Linthorpe Road Cleveland Middlebrough | 01642 820808

Chiquito

The popular Mexican chain has a venue in Durham for all your nacho needs. There are doubtless cheaper and more authentic Mexican restaurants out there but for parties in particular Chiquito serves up a winner, with a fun selection of foods and an interesting range of cocktails

6A Walkergate Durham | 0191 370 6470

Ciara’s

Ciara’s is quality restaurant-ified. The steak melts in your mouth quicker than you can realise it’s probably the best steak you’ve tasted. It specialises in chicken and fish of the a la carte variety. The prices are quite steep in comparison to other places, but you get what you pay for. They do offer a tea-time special, which does not hit the funds as hard, and you still get all that a la carte goodness.

58 HighSt Yarm | 01642 788944

Cinnamon

With its simplified take on a traditional Indian menu, one of Durham’s relatively new restaurants happily marries the old with the new. You’ll find it up tucked away up a flight of stairs.

3 North Road (opposite The Gate Shopping Centre) Durham | 0191 374 0750

Coco Mos

Coco'Mos is fairly big, creating a lively atmosphere, but it's pleasingly partitioned so you don't feel as though you're sitting in a big room. The food’s ok, too.

26 The Side Newcastle | 0191 222 0808 | Central Station Metro

Coffea Caban

A huge range of coffees are available from this very relaxing joint which also serves up a good range of hot and cold food from breakfasts to jacket potatoes to sandwiches.

22 Blandford Square Sunderland | 0191 567 7030 | Sunderland Metro

Cosa Nostra

Offers the best in Mediterranean fusion cuisine with elements of the oriental, this restaurant is a one of a kind dining experience in Sunderland. The downstairs boudoir area transforms into a bar on a night-time that is perfect for a more up-market ambience and cocktails to swoon for. Even if you only go once you have to try this place.

39 Borough Road Sunderland | 0191 510 0080

Costa Coffee

With so many altogether more interesting cafés on offer in Durham the only reason one might visit the rather mundane Costa Coffee is for one of its bucket-sized coffees. Mind, they are rather good.

Prince Bishops Centre High Street | 0191 383 0082

D’acqua

The winning combo of local lad James Shadworth and adopted Mackem Romeo Zakaidze has resulted in this fab restaurant. The Scottish smoked salmon drizzled with lemon créme fraiche is divine and don’t pass up the chance to sample their signature meatballs dish.

Basement / 26-28 John Street Sunderland | 0191 536 4198 | Sunderland Metro

Deng's Eastern Garden

Chinese, with intimate surroundings, this is often the ideal haunt for business folk and couples. They do evening set meals and an excellent three-course lunch for great prices.

24 Hylton Road | 0191 564 1084 | Millfield Metro

Dragon House

A large-capacity Chinese restaurant for up to 150 people with slightly more tasteful decor than we've seen kicking around. Expect to pay around £13-£14 for a traditional Cantonese set meal.

30-32 Stowell St. Newcastle | 0191 232 0868 | St. James Metro

Due's Trattoria

Great views over the harbour marina, this restaurant is from the same people behind Newcastle's Uno's Trattoria and consequently is something of a winner. They provide top-notch Italian cuisine with a laid-back, friendly service. Happy hours for pizza/pasta run from 12pm-2.30pm & 5.30pm-7pm.

3rd Floor, Marine Activities Centre North Dock | 0191 510 0600 | St. Peter's Metro

Dynasty

Perhaps tellingly, precious few people of Chinese origin actually frequent this place but it pulls in local punters all the same with its reasonably-priced buffet deals.

51 North Road Durham | 0191 370 9180

East Ocean Cantonese Restaurant

The East Ocean’s forte is traditional Cantonese seafood. I’ve yet to read a bad word about it, and that’s the way it’s going to stay, especially as I have a lot of love for ocean cuisine.

34-36 Borough Road Middlesbrough | 01642 218 655

El Coto

A fantastic tapas restaurant, which has a cool, Spanish feel and a lovely secluded little courtyard for al fresco dining. They also have an exclusive first floor restaurant where delicious meats are roasted on their Spanish wood burning oven or flame grilled to suit your taste.

21 Leazes Park Rd. Newcastle | 0191 261 0555 | St. James Metro

El Coto

A third outlet of the north-east mini-chain that just opened a couple of years ago, El Coto serves up an exciting range of value-for-money Spanish tapas with style. Easily has the edge over the more well-known La Tasca. Booking is certainly advised.

17 Hallgarth Street Durham | 0191 384 4007

El Torero

Clock the decidedly un-PC bull-fighting posters on the walls and you'll almost immediately recognise this establishment as a Spanish restaurant, serving up tapas and paellas by the score. OK.

Milbrurn House The Side Newcastle | 0191 233 1122 | Central Station Metro

Eliano's

Eliano’s is Italian food at its best. It’s tucked away down a side street, just like the ones which you struggle to find in Italy. The offers are plentiful at Eliano’s too, with a buy-one-get-one free happy hour promotion on all pizza and pasta between 12-2 and 5.30-6.30 Wednesdays-Saturdays, and you can get a three course dinner Wednesdays and Thursday for £13.95...and that includes a free glass of wine! Hey Presto!

20-22 Fairbridge Middlesbrough | 01642 868 566

Emilios

A thoroughly pretty little Italian restaurant (set in historic chapel dating back to 11th century), with a dark interior offset by lovely crisp white linen tablecloths. Does a mean risotto (i.e. it's gorgeous, not stingy) and its fillet steaks are some of the best around. Astonishingly cheap during its frequent happy hours, too.

96 Elvet Bridge Durham | 0191 384 0096

Esquires

Just off Framwellgate Bridge, this reasonably-priced café harbours a fine selection of sweet treats, meat feasts and veggie bites for morning, noon or night. Given its central location, Esquires makes for a good stop to rest in the midst of a day out shopping. Also boasts a small outside terrace overlooking the river for in the event that the weather’s decent.

22 Silver Street Durham | 0191 375 7578

Esquires Coffee Houses

This new franchise has everything: stylish deserts, gorgeous toasties, great selection of hot and cold drinks. Even better it’s all Fair Trade at a standard price, so help yourself while helping others.

Unit 66 The Bridges | 0191 510 0979 | Sunderland Metro

Etsuko

Etsuko is a great way to experience the taste of Japan if you’re a novice. The quality of the food is excellent and the prices are too. They offer a fantastic lunch menu Mondays-Fridays up until 4pm where you can get a soup and a main dish for £2.99!

2a Marton Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 225888

Europa

This is small restaurant where meat-dishes are its speciality... but what it does, it does well! It’s open until 4am, so for those who can still walk and have still got more than taxi fair in their pocket, this is the place to head. Rumour has it that Europe was the first restaurant to coin the “parmo”. For that, we must salute this quaint checked-table cloth eateries. To find out more about the “parmo”, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parmo

10 Borough Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 247 925

Everlys

Everly’s is a newish Continental Café open from 10am right through until 12 at night and its evening menu starts from 6pm serving a wide range of continental dishes all made with local fresh ingredients. It also does Sunday lunches.

104b High St. Yarm | 01642 788 558

Expresso's Coffe Shop

A cool little place for coffee and sandwiches. They have tables outside if you fancy doing it al fresco stylee.

79b Ewesley Rd. High Barnes | 0191 522 0258

Fat Buddha Asian Kitchen

Self-described as Asian Fusion in character, Fat Buddha Asian Kitchen is a superb restaurant, with a vast range of first-rate dishes to choose from. Well-lit and perfectly styled, the only fly in the ointment is the price range – it isn’t cheap. There’s also a classy bar below (not Loveshack, which is - bizarrely - owned by the same company).

Units 6B-6C, Walkergate | 0191 383 1390

Fellinis

Fellini’s has enjoyed success since it opened a few years ago, but I can’t help but feel that it struggles in Central Park’s limelight. The tables are very close together, even on a quiet evening, and this can make for a difficult job for the waiters. The Italian food is very tasty, but Fellini’s is best visited when you have plenty of time and patience.

325 Linthorpe Rd Middlesbrough | 01642 814597

Fisherman's Lodge

Beautifully situated in the woodland of Jesmond Dene and once the town residence of Lord Armstrong this is an upmarket eatery which is reflected in the prices. Focusing on fish and shell fish this is one for that special occasion perhaps?

Deep Dene House Jesmond Dene Newcastle | 0191 281 3281

Frankie & Benny’s

Everything you’d expect from the increasingly popular restaurant chain: a large, reasonably priced menu, friendly service and – of course – a selection of classic Italian-American warblers in the background. Would you like an album with those fries?

2 Lambton St. Sunderland | 0191 514 7369 | Sunderland Metro

Frankie & Benny’s

Frankie and Benny are all about 1950s Italian/American chic. It serves mainly pizza and pasta in a place that looks like the set from “Guys and Dolls”... and that’s not a bad thing. It can get quite busy in here though, so if you wanted some alone time with your guy or doll, you’ll probably have to share it with a stranger behind you.

Haydock Park Rd Thornaby Stockton-on-Tees | 01642 673972

Frankie & Benny's

A fusion of New York City and Italian cuisine comes to The Gate. Aromas from the char-grilled burgers fill the air of this traditionally designed restaurant. Relax and watch experienced chefs create a delicious meal of your choice in the open kitchen.

Thistle Hotel Fry St. Middlesbrough | 01642 232 000

Georgian Townhouse Pancake Cafe

There's a welcoming feel of being in someone's kitchen as you sit down to slurp or chomp on the range of homemade soups and sweet or savoury pancakes. And, if you've eaten way too much and can't handle the walk home, you can stagger into the adjacent B&B run by the same family. Pancake flipping great.

46 Dean St. Newcastle | 0191 222 1892 | Central Station Metro

Hide Cafe Bar & Grill

This little café/restaurant is one of our favourite restaurants in Durham, due in no small part to its informal air and relaxing, modern interior. Stop in for a coffee, a quick spot of breakfast, or indulge in some of the incredible evening meals. Not the cheapest, but worth every penny.

413 Chillingham Road Heaton | 0191 265 7708 | Chillingham Road Metro

Jamal’s

Jamal’s is Middlesbrough’s worst kept secret. It’s tucked away in the corner of Corporation Road, yet it still manages to be packed to the rafters at weekends. It makes some of THE best curries in Teesside and everything is cooked to order. This can mean that you will have to wait a while before you get stuck into your grub, but you can always ply yourself with some of Jamal’s delicious garlic naan bread to silence the stomach grumbles.

Jesmond Dene House Hotel & Restaurant

The emphasis here is on creating fine, flavoursome food where there's both respect and passion for the ingredients. The cooking is skilful, generous and heartfelt with dishes inspired by the rhythm of the seasons - asparagus and tender lamb in spring, for example, wild mushrooms and game in autumn. Although the cooking style has an assured, classic foundation, it takes a fresh and spirited approach with each dish created as a response to the day's market produce.

Jesmond Dene Road Newcastle-upon-Tyne | 0191 212 3000

Joe Rigatonis

Joe Riga’s is quickly becoming a north-east chain of Italian restaurants. It has always been renowned for its happy hour pizza and pasta promotions, and its warm and inviting atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable, so this also attracts a lot of attention. A day will hardily go by when Joe Rigatoni’s isn’t filled with happy customers.

212-216 Linthorpe Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 244 777

Kelz

Kelz is the best of British: fish and chips, and Yorkshire puds etc. However, they always do so with a flare and with amazing prices on the courses. It’s a little set back from the buzz of town, so you won’t usually have to worry about booking tables. All there is to worry about is which county will inspire your cuisine.

427 Linthorpe Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 825 644

Khan Tandoori

Khan’s is cranking up the life span, as it has been open since 1976. It offers great deals on two and three course meals, and it has a fantastic buffet menu. It has everything a foodie could want under one roof, and it does takeaway. Ding dong!

42 Borough Rd. 01642 243 024 417 Linthorpe Rd 01642 813 559 349 Linthorpe Rd. 01642 817 457 Middlesbrough

The food slants towards imaginative British-themed dishes such as black pudding with smoked trout and bread and butter pudding with honey ice-cream. Single from £60 Double from £75 Family from £95 (4 people)

Waddington Street Durham | 0191 370 9977

Koh-I-Noor

A traditional Indian slap bang in the middle of loads of boisterous pubs. Established back in 1969 it still pulls 'em in despite the uninviting facade. The four course meal is particularly good value.

26 Cloth Market Newcastle | 0191 232 5379 | Monument Metro

Kublai Khan

Tyneside's only Mongolian restaurant (they do Chinese too) in a buffet stylee. Select your ingredients and they'll cook it in front of you.

23-29 Side Quayside Newcastle | 0191 221 2203 | Central Station Metro

La Barca

Formerly Giovannis, this restaurant has been totally refurbished and done out with loads of shipping paraphernalia (including some lovely lanterns) adorning the walls and ceiling. It's a cosy as they come and their happy hours (5-7pm each day) will set you back £4 for an above average pizza/pasta. Nautical but nice.

15 Station Rd. Redcar | 01642 490 368

La Spaghettata

A student favourite but equally accommodating of locals and visitors, La Spaghettata - affectionately known as ‘La Spag’ - serves up an adequate range of Italian favourites. If the food is a little bland, the décor, low-level lighting and cheap prices make this one worth a visit. Note that the restaurant is hidden up a long staircase.

66 Saddler Street Durham | 0191 383 9290

La Tasca

La Tasca probably falls short of serving the best tapas in the city owing to the brilliance of the aforementioned El Coto, but it is well worth a visit all the same. The splendidly cosy decor and friendly staff contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the food – if a little pricey – is authentic enough, though dishes vary in quality.

58 Saddler Street Durham | 0845 126 2958

La Tasca

Large tapas restaurant (part of a national chain) with a typically Spanish feel - orange washed walls, picture tiles, huge windows etc. and good atmosphere. Tapas are reasonable in price but not particularly inspiring.

106 Quayside Newcastle | 0191 230 4006 | Central Station Metro

La Toscana

A wayward punt away from St. James’ Park this fab place is the real deal with the owner, Salvatore, and his family running this place for over 30 years. Superb menu and an atmosphere that is second to none keep diners coming back for more.

La Toscanina

A place with a good and growing reputation. A family restaurant with a nice soupy warm atmosphere and great staff. Their a la carte menu is well worth your attention and there's the usual array of happy hours for all you pizza/pasta junkies. Tell them it's your birthday and you might even see the tambourine come out...

Lau's Buffet King

They have over 90 varieties of different dishes daily in their popular Chinese buffet, eat all you can. Comfortable, modern surroundings and seating for over 300. Good stuff if you're a fan of this style of restaurant.

44-50 Stowell St. Newcastle | 0191 261 8868 | St. James Metro

Leonardo's

They promise 'a taste of Italy' at this smallish establishment which is big on happy hours and hustle and bustle. It doesn't look particularly inviting and they don't have much of a range (all the usual chicken/steak dishes are there), but their sweets are usually melt in the mouth stuff. We've been to better but we've also been to worse.

2 Burdon Road Sunderland | 0191 510 1545 | Sunderland Metro

Lin Palace Teppanyaki and Sushi

This is one of the few authentic Japanese restaurants in the area. It turns up the heat on excitement with its TeppanYaki hot plate, and its interior is authentically decked with lanterns and simplistic furniture...so say konnichiwa to my new favourite restaurant!

186 Linthorpe Road Middlesbrough | 01642 213 551

Little Saigon

This Vietnamese restaurant has not been long open but it’s a right little cracker. Nicely done out (check out the hand-painted murals) and the food – asparagus & crabmeat soup, caramel pork, Saigon chicken claypot rice etc – is flavoursome to its core.

6 Bigg Market Newcastle | 0191 233 0766 | Central Station Metro

Louis

Louis hasn't been around that long but it has a good reputation for it's continental selection of quality dishes. The lobster is particularly good, as are the steak and chicken dishes. They're big on fish too.

71-73 Osborne Road Jesmond Newcastle | 0191 281 5284 | Jesmond Metro

Louis'

Sunderland has unaccountable cafes and fast food outlets with too many mediocre ones to list, however, take time out for Louis' - a huge cafe with a fish restaurant upstairs. Louis' is nowt fancy but makes a mean cup of coffee and was once nearly famous thanks to the warblings of local musos Martin Stephenson & The Daintees.

118 Borough Rd. Middlesbrough | 01642 250 145

McCoy's at Tontine

I’m not going to mince my words; you will have to book a table before coming here. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic evening. There’s no chance for elbow-banging or manoeuvring yourself around a family to get to the toilets. This is a place where understated elegance is as important as the food. It IS expensive, but when have you known of a place with a chandelier that isn’t? The food is more like an elegant soiree in your mouth rather than a party, but that’s McCoy’s bistro to a T.

The Cleveland Staddle Bridge Tontine | 01609 882671

McQuays Of Yarm

The quality speaks for itself at McQuays and the setting compliments this with its simple decor and uncomplicated arrangement. A Portuguese-themed chain restaurant perfectly suited to parties but perhaps a little loud for more relaxed diners. Prices are reasonable if not fantastic, and the Portuguese twist makes things slightly more interesting.

The New Kwai Lam Restaurant

Its food recently described “as uneven as the floor” by the city’s own Durham Times, New Kwai Lam is for tea-total diners commanding a seriously limited budget and perhaps equally-limited palette. Situated in some lovely basement vaults this restaurant offers a novel concept in that the menu is made up of starters and puddings (as the name hints at). Think tapas without the chorizo sausage.

2-6 Shakespeare St Newcastle | 0191 233 2515 | Monument Metro

Stateside Diner

This smart little diner is a great place to grab a burger, some ribs, a juicy steak - or whatever - and wash it all down with a frothy milkshake. It's done out in authentic US style (complete with 50s style jukebox) and has the added attraction of being fully licensed.

37 Pink Lane Newcastle | 0191 261 7370 | Central Station Metro

Strada

Split over two floor with stunning views overlooking the war memorial at Old Eldon Squre, Strada is a very stylish contemporary Italian serving up great quality dishes that are freshly prepared and don’t cost a fortune. A goodie and very friendly, too.

Old Eldon Square Blackett Street Newcastle | 0191 2616070 | Monument Metro

Substance

This bar/cafe is something of a winner, and freshly underwent a revamp in the summer. Serving food between 12am-6pm in a stylish interior, they sell a great range of pasta dishes as well as burgers and such like. It's a bar too and so you can enjoy the food free ambience until 1am every night.

1a-1c Tunstall Road Sunderland | 0191 565 8899 | University Metro

TGI Fridays

Ok, so the staff appear so enthusiastic you swear they have been drinking artificial colouring in the cloakroom, but at least you know what you’re getting with TGI Fridays. It was established in New York in 1965, hence the blatant Americana theme. Their attention to detail continues from the walls and into the food. They fry, grill and smother every meat going, and do so with many delicious side orders. One thing that must be said is that their Jack Daniels sauce is to die/dip for!

Teesside Retail Park Middlesbrough Road | 01642 613135

Thai Manor

One of the newest restaurants in Sunderland and already carving a niche out for itself as one of the best. The dishes are always freshly prepared to the highest standard and their different menus include the Hot and Spicy Set and the sumptuous Seafood set.

5 Foyle Street Sunderland | 0191 567 6297

Thali

Indian restaurant where it's great to try little bits of everything from their Thali dishes. Has steadily built up a good reputation and has had the distinction of being included in the Cobra Good Curry Guide.

44 Dean Street Newcastle | 0191 230 22443 | Monument Metro

The Almshouses Café-restaurant

Situated at the heart of a UNISCO World Heritage Site, The Almshouses Café-restaurant could hardly boast a better locale. All the same, its reputation for an exceptional range of cakes and puddings has been what’s really enchanted locals and tourists alike for 25 years.

Palace Green Durham | 0191 386 1054

The Barnes

A popular carvery serving traditional English food at reasonable prices. Meat eaters swear by it, with their roasts coming up trumps. There's also a function room available for hire for any occasion.

Barnes Hotel Durham Road Sunderland | 0191 528 5644 | University Metro

The Brasserie

The Brasserie prides itself on its traditional and its modern dishes. It cooks whatever is in season, and if you crave something out of season, you’ll just have to wait, impatient Annie! Its wine list boasts an impressive 40 wines, so you’ll soon forget about the out-of-season vegetables you craved. Plus, you can make your troubles melt away with music on a Monday, as anything that is considered “easy listening” is played live for all to hear. What a treat for the senses.

19 High St Yarm | 01642 890 020

The Cluny

Slightly out of town (situated under Byker Bridge), The Cluny continually racks up plaudits by the score in its own field which just happens to be the world of the bar/cafe/venue. Not many places could pull off a trio of differing disciplines with such dashing aplomb but they manage it admirably here. One of the best.

36 Lime Street Ouseburn | 0191 230 4474 | Manors / Byker Metro

The Galley

A family restaurant and coffee shop above Wilkinsons on Fawcett St. No frills but tasty and friendly nonetheless.

33-42 Fawcett St. Sunderland | 0191 565 0007 | Sunderland Metro

The Georgian Townhouse

Where to begin?! Forming part of a cosy bed-and-breakfast and situated inside a Grade II-listed building, this family-run pancake café is something special. A warm, welcoming feel will greet anyone lucky enough to sit down and slurp or chomp on the range of homemade soups and sweet or savoury pancakes on offer. Opening times may vary.

11 Crossgate Durham | 0191 386 8070

The Godfather

Near the Theatre Royal, The Godfather has an ok a la carte menu and a typical main course will probably set you back around seven or eight quid. The Godfather's not only authentic but semi-famous in Newcastle due to the celebs who've dined here with everyone from Gazza to Charlton Heston nipping in for a bite to eat.

3 Market Street Newcastle | 0191 232 6171 | Monument Metro

The Grainger Rooms

The Grainger Rooms is very understated but the food is absolutely divine. Feast on the likes of North Shields smoked haddock salad with Berwick Edge and watercress dressing or pan fried English chicken with leeks, bacon and sage mash and you’ll see what we mean. The food is all locally sourced, too.

7 Higham Place Newcastle | 0191 232 4949 | Monument Metro

The Kansas Bar and Grill

The Kansas is an American themed restaurant, where racks of ribs, southern fried chicken and any meat that can be grilled is bound to be on the menu. It gets good reviews because of its large portions and quick service. The interior is quite 1940s - a bit Pearl Harbour (the film, not the actual attack), which will invite questions from the kids, but just fill their mouths with more meat and the questions should cease.

Teesside Leisure Park Thornaby Stockton-on-Tees | 01642 607 000

The Olde Ship Hotel

Check in to The Olde Ship Hotel. With locally caught seafood on the menu, seafaring paraphernalia at every turn and a welcoming real fire this hotel offers the perfect sanctuary on stormy nights.

Main Street Seahouses | 01665 720200

Great tapas in this informal joint which has long been established as one of the best hang-outs around. Trendy but friendly with it.

89 Westgate Road Newcastle | 0191 221 1022 | Central Station Metro

The Undercroft Restaurant

Enjoy friendly service and home-cooked food in the former monks' wine cellar beneath the ancient Cathedral on Palace Green. A vow of silence is optional.

Durham Cathedral Durham | 0191 386 3721

Throwing Stones

Sited in the stunning steel and glass architecture of the National Glass Museum at the mouth of the river Wear, this fab restaurant with a European feel, has to be recommended for the view alone. The traditional food has a contemporary twist and it is the ideal place for a full-blown meal or just a cappuccino. Open Monday-Sunday during 10am-5pm.

National Glass Centre Liberty Way Sunderland | 0191 565 3939 | St. Peter's Metro

Tia’s

Ugly on the outside, ugly on the inside, Tia’s certainly isn’t the prettiest of Tex-Mex restaurants. But if you can stomach the decor, you’ll love the food. Formerly Rock’n’Amigos for over 10 years, the family-friendly venue rustles up a range of interesting Mexican dishes as well as a host of pastas, pizzas and steaks. Come during happy hour for a cheap and fun meal out with a difference.

84 Claypath Durham | 0191 383 9001

Treats Coffee Shop

Another upstairs cafe which caters for a mixed clientele. No main meals as such but you can try one of their baked potatoes or the many cakes/deserts on offer. Home made scones and speciality gateauxs are a speciality.

27 Silver Street Durham | 0191 384 5620

Twelve

A really fab wine bar and restaurant with enough room for 40 diners upstairs who tuck into the likes of surf &turf of roast monkfish &confit duck and grilled aubergine &courgette timbale.

144 High Street West Sunderland | 0191 510 2210 | Sunderland Metro

Tyneside Coffee Rooms

Situated within the Tyneside Cinema complex (which has recently underwent a huge, multi-million pound refit), the Tyneside Coffee Rooms has thankfully retained its relaxing vibe. It’s been on the second floor of the cinema for 70 years now and its mix of comfort food and genuinely warm-hearted service has made it a favourite of Newcastle café life for many a year and for all ages. You don’t have to be seeing a film to pay it a visit either.

Tyneside Cinema 10 Pilgrim Street Newcastle upon Tyne | 0191 227 5520 | Monument Metro

Uno's Trattoria

The reputation of its Italian food often sees Uno's packed out and you'll often have to wait in the bar area for a table even if you've booked, although it's always well worth it as the atmosphere here is second to none - every night's a party! What makes it such an attraction is that while the food is fab their prices are within the reaches of most pockets.

18 Sandhill Quayside Newcastle | 0191 261 5264 | Central Station Metro

Uppercrust

Uppercrust is a legendary cafe where the question, “Can I have eggs on a raft?” is still probably used. It’s your no frills cafe; you get a tray, you pick what you want, it gets placed on said tray and you try to grab a seat under one of the ceiling fans. I’ll still be going to this place until I can no longer walk up its stairs, and even then, I might fund a stair-lift installation.

Hill Street Shopping Centre 2a Dunkerque Mall Middlesbrough | 01642 211 538

Urban Cafe

Located inside the Dance City building this is a lovely café which serves up an enticing menu of sandwiches, salads and soups as well as breakfast, desserts and a range of hot and cold drinks (including smoothies). Everything is made from fresh ingredients, too.

Dance City Temple Street Newcastle | 0191 269 5590 | Central Station Metro

Utong

This light and airy Thai restaurant is decorated in a very traditional style which lends a warm and relaxing ambience to the restaurant which has proved very popular since its recent opening. They have an expertly crafted menu which is well suited for both a la carte or a full Thai banquet.

Nexus House 33 St. James Boulevard Newcastle | 0191 261 9080 | St. James Metro

Vennels

This well-respected café is always packed and when you see the size of their flapjacks it's no wonder. Perfect for those post-book-browsing afternoons at Waterstones next door, Vennels is light, airy and has a wonderful courtyard that predictably gets crammed in the summer. Everything sold is baked on the premises (their Bannoffee Pie is trés bien) and they also serve speciality sandwiches, pâtés and even have a vegan bar.

71 Saddler's Yard Durham | 0191 375 0571

Villa del Porto

New on the Sunderland dining scene and what a stunning addition. It’s an Italian with French influences and has superb views over the River Wear. And given its location there’s no surprise that they specialise in sea food. They also do excellent pasta and pizza dishes which have a slight twist to reflect the head chef’s home in Puglia. A must visit.

Wylam Wharf Low Street | 0191 567 4119

Vujon

Superb original Indian cuisine set in a rich, opulent room with heavily draped windows and crisp linen tablecloths etc. Formal atmosphere and a bit pricey but if Indian food is your forte you should check it out as they offer a wide range of dishes from many Indian regions. Was recommended in the 2009 Michelin Guide.

29 Queen Street Quayside Newcastle | 0191 221 0601 | Monument Metro

Wagamama

A welcome addition to Newcastle sees Wagamama slotting in nicely to Old Eldon Square where a bewildering, yet truly scrumptious, array of meals await you. It’s all communal and it’s all good.

8 Eldon Square Newcastle | 0191 233 0663 | Monument Metro

Waiting Room

A superb vegetarian restaurant that's also a big hit with meat eaters too, due to the quality of the food. Good portions, well presented and a scrummy sweet menu; what more could you want? How about an excellent beer and wine list (you can even bring your own booze), and it's not expensive either. Bonus.

9 Station Raod Eaglescliffe Stockton on Tees | 01642 780 465

Waterside Palace

This Cantonese/Peking restaurant cannot be missed as you head towards Newcastle's Quayside, with its distinctive Pagoda-like design, resplendent in red, green and gold. You can expect to pay around £15-£25 per head and it's generally a fair standard.

29 Forth Banks Quayside Newcastle | 0191 232 6090 | Central Station Metro

Whispers Coffee Lounge

En-route to or from the train and bus stations, Whispers represents a good place to start or end your day. All the usual snacks and meals are on offer with a good selection of drinks and friendly service rounding out the package. Particularly worth a visit during the summer since the café also has an outside seating area.

Reform Place, off North Road Durham | 0191 384 0252

YO! Sushi

The conveyer belt means dishes are available immediately and the surroundings are equipped for speed. Taps on tables dispense fizzy and still water. And should you need to communicate with a member of staff you can call them using a handy buzzer. YO Sushi! is about seeing, grabbing, eating, leaving. Not everybody's idea of a fantastic meal out but certainly appealing to harried shoppers and time strapped office workers.

Fenick's Food Hall Northumberland Street Newcastle | 0191 406 0801 | Monument Metro

Zen

Another Asian Fusion affair, Zen also certainly isn’t the cheapest restaurant in Durham but it could well lay claim to being the best. Offering up everything from Asian-style tapas to sirloin steaks, the restaurant boasts an impressive range of food and equally impressive décor. The drinks selection is more than respectable, too.

Court Lane Durham | 0191 384 9588

Zizzi

Like most Italians, Zizzi serve up an array of pizza and pasta dishes, but unlike most Italians, these particular dishes are their own speciality (and just about the only main courses they provide). Mouth-wateringly good and the open plan split level design creates a buzzy atmosphere.

42-50 Grey Street Newcastle | 0191 261 8360 | Monument Metro
